Remember sitting on a hard desk chair, achy with growing pains, trying to change positions every .5 seconds, and fighting to pay attention when you were in junior high? I certainly do, and I see my students struggle with the same thing daily!
Junior high students are at an incredibly pivotal time in their development, and it is my desire to make the greatest impact on their lives as I possibly can.
If they can look back on our classroom experience and not only remember reading and writing, but also remember being relaxed, focused, and comfortable, I have done my job well. Will you help make that dream a reality?
My Project
Because focusing and being attentive is such a huge struggle for many students--especially students in junior high, something beyond curriculum and teaching methods needs to change. By getting rid of traditional desks and implementing flexible seating, my students will be able to swivel around, fidget, release extra energy, and therefore better focus their attention on their studies. Better yet, flexible seating gives students a choice! Imagine coming into class EARLY every day in an effort to get the best seat! That is now becoming our reality. Comfort and choice go a long way in aiding my students' success, and I hope to continue that trend. Last school year, I implemented a few stability ball chairs into my classroom, and it made a HUGE impact on my students.
Using stability balls and wobble chairs (and engaging the core and balance) helped engage both sides of my students' brains, resulting in better focus and concentration.
We all know that some kids need more movement than others, especially those with a sensory processing disorder (ADHD), so being in motion allows their brains to be engaged. There is a neurological pathway that goes from the body's balance and movement system to its alert systems in the brain. Movement allows for alertness and attention which will then lead to greater success. Now, not only will students be able to choose a stability ball to aid in their focus, they'll also be able to choose from wobble chairs, office chairs, or a standing desk. The options and the possibilities are endless!
