My fifth grade students are excited about school and we are always working on improving our learning. We are a group of thirty one, motivated individuals eager to learn about everything and anything. We cover all the curricular areas and we work individually, with partners, in groups, and as a whole class. But, sometimes we are in need of a more flexible seating arrangement within our classroom.
The traditional seating is not always the best environment for all students to learn.
Not all of my students learn the same way. Some need an alternative to sitting in a traditional chair and this is one way that I can address their needs. In our classroom, we strive to learn all that we can and we also encourage others in our class to do the same. We support each other and if this alternative seating helps some of the members in the class, it is a benefit to the entire class.
My Project
Flexible seating is a necessity in today's classroom. Flexible, alternative seating allows energetic students to be more successful in the classroom. Alternative seating cuts down on distractions and redirection, and they help maintain balance and good posture in the students' bodies. Most of the day, the students are sitting in a traditional chair for their learning. While this works for most students, not all students benefit from sitting in a traditional chair. Being able to differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of the students in the class, is easier than trying to meet the needs of the students that need to move a little. Current research is telling us that there is a positive correlations between movement and or physical activity, learning, and achievement.
The students will be able to move with these stools as they move throughout the classroom during the day.
Students that need a little movement to keep them engaged in learning will benefit from these stools. For some students, a little movement is what they need to perform at their best. All of the students want to be successful, and with alternative seating options, we are moving one step closer to reaching the needs of all students.
