Help me give my students standing tables, bean bags, and stools to promote the love of reading! Comfortable seating means more reading, which increases comprehension. Student success increases, but most importantly it instills a life-long love of reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students have suffered greatly due to extensive historic flooding in the town of Wharton that has not been seen since 1905. Approximately sixty percent of the town was under water for approximately ninety-six hours. Within the district, the high school had multiple buildings, including the cafeteria, auditorium and all career and technical classrooms, flooded and inoperable for approximately half of the school year. Additionally, there was water damage sustained at the junior high due to wind-driven rain. Our community has suffered greatly, but our students have risen above all of the adversities due to education, the one constant in their lives.
Our district population is approximately eighty percent low socioeconomic, and the destruction brought by Hurricane Harvey has only amplified the struggle of this community.
Our academic achievements across the district have improved greatly throughout all challenges this school year. Our students have shown great perseverance in light of adversity, and we, as a district, want to continue to provide a stable and challenging academic experience for all students.
My Project
By creating a warm, inviting area for students to read, it is our hope - and research supports - that students will devote more time to reading. More time spent reading increases fluency, understanding, and, most importantly, the love of reading.
When students love to read they will read more.
When students read more they will develop stronger reading skills which will increase STAAR scores. In order to be successful on the Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies STAAR tests, one must first understand what is being read. The only way to increase reading skills is to read. The inviting climate of a flexible seating classroom will encourage reading success!
This project is not designed to increase STAAR scores: that will be an added benefit. This project is designed to create a life-long love for reading and, in turn, help our students become the best that they can be!
