Flexible Seating in the Upper Elementary Classroom
My students need wobble chairs, pillows, chair bands and other items in our classroom to encourage creative thinking, active participation in all classrooms activities, and to allow them to move while learning.
My students are well-behaved, sweet, attentive fifth graders. They love to learn and to work individually and in groups. They are full of energy and that is where the flexible seating idea derived from. I noticed that a handful of my students had a very difficult time sitting in the hard plastic chairs that are prevalent in our school.
I participated in a graduate school course based on Action Research.
The class lead me to my project on Flexible Seating and how it would benefit the students in my classroom.
My Project
I am creating this project to request more items to be used in my classroom for my flexible seating. I began using flexible seating in my classroom last school year when I noticed a group of boys in the year prior who had a difficult time focusing. This lead me to a research class that allowed me to focus on what my students needed to allow them to become better learners and participants in our classroom.
Flexible Seating is the best thing I could have done!
My students are actively engaged while having unrestricted movements at their seats. I removed the traditional plastic chairs and offered the students new options. And with these requested items, I will be able to improve the current options and add additional options which gives my students more choice and control over their learning. We currently use yoga balls, which gives the students options to move while still participating in classroom activities. We have tables that are raised up to allow students to sit at stools or to even stand. We have tables that are lowered for students to stretch out or sit on the floor. I have several options that help fidgety students including massagers that students can add to their traditional seats. I am looking to get the fidget bands to attach to students chairs to allow for feet movement.
Flexible Seating has added an addition to my classroom that allows my students more freedom and control over their learning. Its makes them much more comfortable and aids in their learning as they are allowed to move about more freely.
