My students need choice! The papasan cushions are a great seating option, and the clipboards will be used as portable desks! Different tables, like the high table, will cater to students who need different options, but would still like a table!
Students in my blended 4th and 5th grade classroom are curious and creative. Everyday we seek out ways to celebrate each other, honor our diverse backgrounds, and build on each other’s strengths. My students are part of a team, we call ourselves The OneTen, (our room number), and everyday we come together to share, learn, appreciate and play.
In The OneTen, we respect each other by supporting one another in our challenges and having an understanding that we all have different needs.
This is truly an incredible group of learners! I am so lucky to be on this journey with them!
My Project
Research boasts the many benefits of flexible seating in the classroom. Using storage clipboards instead of desks, and cushions or pillows for seats will allow for student mobility in the classroom. Different table options, including high tables like the one listed, benefit those growing bodies who need comfort and those that just have the desire to stand! This design promotes engagement and ownership of the classroom, and creates an environment based on mutual respect.
Flexible seating is an inclusive, student-centered way to encourage engagement and self-advocacy.
Like choosing your seat at a coffee shop, students will enjoy comfort and a feeling of belonging.
