My students need flexible seating because if they feel comfortable they will be able to focus more and learn more. Classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
Our classroom is a friendly, welcoming environment for our students. We are a self-contained class and students are in our classroom for most of the day. They leave only for Health, Gym, and Lunch. My goal for our students is to have them become respectable members of society.
Our school is an out of district placement for students with emotional/psychological disorders, as well as ADHD.
Not only do they have these issues, some have been traumatized as well for different reasons. We use a behavior modification system to keep students on track. We would like students to earn time in a student lounge and work it into the behavior modification system. We would use this as an incentive for our students. Most of our students come from underprivileged homes and do not get positive reinforcement in their lives. Since our students are in the classroom for majority of the day, we would like a place for students to learn social skills, communication skills, as well as collaborative skills.
My Project
In our classroom we are trying to make an environment that is open to collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. You can not do that with desks in rows. Most of our students have severe ADHD and sensory issues and can not sit in regular desks. They need to feel comfortable and sit in a way that is good for them. This can be working standing up, sitting in a bean bag chair, or bouncing on an exercise ball. If they are on the exercise ball and can bounce while they do their work they are more likely to be able to sit and participate in the lesson.
