Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have had the honor of teaching the best group of little people imaginable.
These little people face many challenges and hardships that would defeat any average person.
They all receive free lunch, English is a second language for over half of my class, and many are forced to grow up too soon out of necessity at home (caring for younger siblings, being bounced from one family member to another, coming to school without clean clothes, and in some cases even experiencing homelessness and other serious issues outside of school). My students are not average, however. They are extraordinary.
Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school ready and excited to learn! They come with open minds and open hearts and are the most remarkable and kindhearted people I have had the pleasure to know. This is shown day after day as they request extra time to work in place of recess, show excitement over every lesson or activity I plan, persevere to complete accurate work no matter how long it takes, extend a helping hand to classmates when they need it, and share anything and everything if it is helpful to do so.
My Project
This project will help me set my students up for optimal success in learning. Flexible seating helps to set conditions for collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Students will be able to have choice, comfort, higher engagement, and thus higher achievement by being given flexible seating options.
Research shows that flexible seating helps students burn more calories, use extra energy that often comes with the territory of being 7 and 8, boost the metabolism, increase motivation and engagement, create a better flow of oxygen to the brain, and improve core strength and posture.
This ultimately has great implications for achievement!
My classroom has already gone toward a blending learning model where students are working in small groups all day with to have their needs met. They have been successful with this process and flexible seating will be able to help us take things to the next level. These students are extremely hard workers and impress me day after day by setting high standards of excellence and surpassing them. They deserve the opportunity to experience a flexible seating classroom environment.
