Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low income/high-poverty school. The majority of my students are from families that do not speak English as their primary language. This creates a wonderfully diverse community in the classroom however, it causes challenges for the students both at home and in school every day. I also teach at a school where all special education students are mainstreamed into the classroom. This is a wonderful model, however proper materials can be hard to come by.
My school is a magnet school that focuses on science and technology.
We are a Title I school that often lacks the funding for extra supplies that could aid in the classroom on a daily basis.
My Project
On a daily basis, my students participate in center activities where they are rotating from station to station. We do these rotations for both our math and literacy blocks.
Having flexible seating in our classroom will make a comfortable learning environment for my students!
Many of our current chairs are outdated and wobbly. Also, the chairs in my classroom are not all the same height. If the students are working in partners they are not seated comfortably at the same level. To enhance our math and literacy centers and create a more comfortable environment, we would love to have the option to grab a colorful stool and use it to participate in small group instruction or to take to our technology station. In addition to the stools, we would love to use the wobble seats when sitting on the carpet. At this station students play math games or during literacy they read stories during our "Drop and Everything and Read" time. These wobble seats will enhance the carpet area to make it a much more fun place to play and read.
Research has shown that flexible seating in the classroom helps all types of learners whether it is students with disabilities or students that are on grade level. I would love to add these awesome seating options to my math and literacy stations on a daily basis!
