It is no shock to anyone who has worked in a school that kids like to move. They wiggle and the squirm and they struggle to sit in a desk all day long. My kids need the opportunity to build movement and choice into their seating arrangement in the classroom.
My students are 3rd and 4th graders.
Like most kids their age, they like to move, explore, interact, and socialize. I want them to come to a classroom where they will feel comfortable in their learning environment. I don't want their learning to be stifled by restrictive seating.
My Project
My students will use these materials to have more choices when it comes to seating. The students will have flexible options about where to sit each day. This will not only help them learn more efficiently, but it will also help them learn to make choices that are beneficial for themselves. New research also shows that flexible seating may cut down on behavior issues, increase engagement, and decrease the risk of childhood obesity because the students have more opportunities for movement.
This project will make a difference for my kids because it will help them be comfortable in their learning environment.
It will also provide them with opportunities to get their "wiggles" out while they complete rigorous academic activities. Alternative seating options will help my students who want to learn, but struggle to sit in a chair through out the day.
