"Why do we need to know this?" This is a question we hear constantly in a middle school math classroom. This project is to grant my classroom with flexible seating options to allow my students to wiggle and wobble to exert energy while learning mathematics. I have also observed that students LOVE to learn math when they can work with others, move around the room and use up some energy!
As a result, some of my favorite activities to do in the classroom are stations, task cards, and scavenger hunts that involve moving!
Allowing my students to move around the room with these flexible seating options will help make them more successful throughout the year. The student population at our school is comprised of many different cultures, socioeconomic levels, and academic success. We are a magnet school of Traditional and Global Studies with the focus on writing. Yes, the students are top in the county for writing, but they also are super smart in math.
I believe the math classroom needs to be a hands-on project-based environment, full of challenge and discovery and in order to achieve this goal my classroom needs more.
My Project
These flexible seating options will make a huge difference in daily learning activities. The exercise ball at the bottom will help my students stay focused, while they are able to bounce and move while learning. After extensive research, I also added the wobble chairs because they are the most popular among flexible seating in the classroom. Students will be able to use the wobble stools while completing their work to exert some energy. The bouncy bands will allow for students to still sit at a traditional desk but move their legs and exert energy while learning!
Middle school students have SO MUCH energy throughout the day, that implementing these flexible seating options will help ensure their success in math class!
