I teach kindergarten- 5th grade students with autism in a low income school in West Michigan. My students keep me on my toes each day with their unique personalities and abilities.
If you’ve met one individual with autism, you’ve met one individual with autism.
For many students, with or without disabilities, sitting in a "typical" chair is challenging. I want to provide my students the opportunity to have a variety of different seating options to optimize their learning. A comfortable learning environment will lead to more student engagement, which means more success!
My active elementary age students with autism have a difficult time sitting in your "typical" classroom chair day in and day out. Just like adults, they get tired of sitting in chairs all day and will go to great lengths to slither and slide their way out of a chair. I am looking to increase my student engagement during work time by providing students the option to sit in a more comfortable chair that makes them WANT to learn!
Some of the seating options that will be provided with this project are yoga balls in different sizes, yoga ball chairs, and colorful stools!
Many of my students have limited verbal skills or are non verbal and have a difficult time expressing their wants and needs. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be to feel uncomfortable sitting in a hard chair all day but not able to tell your teacher? When my students have difficulty expressing themselves they may have behavior problems. I want my students to be able to choose where they sit based on their need. Comfortable students = optimized learning!
This project would help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day. I want them to feel comfortable and at home in our classroom. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
