Located on an Air Force base, our school's population consists mostly of children of active duty military members. Our students come from all over the world and are forced to work even harder to fill in the learning gaps that result from their parents' periodic change of duty stations. Our goal is to educate all students to their highest potential and meet their individual learning goals in a mainstreamed learning environment. My classroom is in need of flexible seating to keep students engaged during independent activities.
My Project
My students come to school full of life and ready to learn! Just like adults get tired of sitting in hard chairs all day, students do too! They need more flexible/comfortable seating options to enhance student engagement and learning. Studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable. Students are able to be comfortable on seat cushions for a soft place to sit.
Some of the seating options that will be provided with this project are soft seat cushions and lap desks.
All of these options will give my students the opportunity to sit comfortably while they are learning. An article from Edtech Magazine talks about the demise of the cold, hard school desk! "If we want our students ready for the 21st century, we need classrooms that engage, motivate and inspire our students. Cold hard desks ain’t doin' that!"
This project would significantly help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day. I want them to feel comfortable and at home in our classroom. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
