Our school is in rural area with 70% free and reduced lunch. I have a class size of 20 incredibly smart, loving, and kind third grade students. Thirty percent of my class receive weekend back packs of food from our school food bank. Despite the poor homes they come from, they are always happy and love to learn! I love to teach them! I want my classroom to be a place that they love to come in to be educated!
My Project
My students need flexible seating instead of the tired old desks that have not been replaced in over 50 years. They are uncomfortable and distracting to the education of my students!
When you look out into the classrooms of my school you will see hard back desks with chairs attached.
The desks lift to be opened causing students to drop stuff all over the floor. It is distracting, not only to their classmates but also to their education.
My students are from a rural community where classroom furniture has been used for decades. In today’s world there are many seating options to assist in not only ergonomic design but also designed to encourage more productivity among the workforce. Why not incorporate that same philosophy into the classroom?
My Project
One area my students struggle the most is staying comfortable and focused in their uncomfortable desks. They are hard. There is no option to adjust the seat. Some desks are slanted and some are flat. Keeping them neat and organized is nearly impossible.
In my classroom, we have some flexible seating options; however I would like to create a classroom with only flexible seating. Where students could choose to sit where they are most comfortable. After all, if they are not worried about their desks, they are more focused on the classroom instruction. They are more engaged actively participating in their education this automatically improving their test scores. It’s a win win for everyone!
