As a new teacher in first grade this year, I am beyond excited to be a part of the educational journey for some of the sweetest little learners of them all! Boys and girls of this age come to school full of excitement with the joy of learning shining bright in their eyes! Watching amazing personal growth as their "aha!" moments occur will be thrilling to say the least! :)
Our population includes many striving and struggling learners, and any and all ways that their learning opportunities can be maximized is essential.
We are a Title I school district with a high poverty rate, and I want each and every student I have the privilege to support to love learning in my classroom. The joy evident on students' faces when they are invited to learn in new and exciting ways is priceless! Flexible seating will reach so many learners in a refreshing way!
My Project
Research is overwhelmingly in favor of alternative seating opportunities, and providing little learners with the very best physical environment possible is a must! Just like every adult performs best in unique ways, so do children have individual needs that must be given consideration. Students shouldn't be asked to learn from a one-size-fits-all traditional chair at a table or desk because to some that learning position is in itself distracting and uncomfortable. We need to demonstrate to children that their learning is what is most important - not their compliance to traditional seating arrangements!
I plan to support children's diverse learning needs by allowing them to monitor and self-select their optimal learning positions and participate in choosing where they feel best about tackling learning tasks.
We'll use the large classroom rug as our Gathering Place for whole class learning as well as for a great and comfy place for kids to choose to read, work, and collaborate comfortably! The wobble chairs, can-do donut balls, and fidget bands will help students stay focused and feel confident all day long! Students of all learning modalities will benefit from these items and the!
