Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a diverse group of fourth graders with more than half of the population from low income households. All students learn in different ways. The challenge my students are facing is being comfortable in a one size fits all classroom.
My goal is to incorporate flexible seating options for all my students.
From my experience, students benefit a great deal when provided with choices of where to sit during direction instruction, engaging in small group assignments, while reading independently or listening to teacher read alouds.
Flexible seating is highly beneficial for students. Children need to move! Flexible seating gives students permission to bounce, lean, kick, twist, roll, fidget, kneel and stand to suit their needs. Allowing flexible seating makes the classroom more student centered, improves the learning environment, keeps students calm and focused and helps students be their best learning self.
My Project
The bean bag chairs, learning stools, meditation pillows, peanut balls and balancing pods will make an enormous difference in my students' learning. These materials will allow students to be actively engaged each day while working either independently or with a small group.
Flexible seating allows students to be successful while eliminating distractions.
Students will be free to choose from the materials to find a comfortable place in the classroom. In doing so, students will feel supported and understood.
With the wide variety of seating options, I will be able to offer several choices for students to be comfortable and productive in the classroom.
