Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every child learns in his or her own unique way. My students learn best when they are taught material in a way that incorporates all of their senses. They also depend on a routine, structure and organization to succeed. They are taught best in a one to one or small group setting. I am lucky enough to teach and work with wonderful students in a special education program designed for students with Autism in Yonkers, New York.
My students must be involved, stimulated, using multiple learning styles and interested in what they are learning in order for them to retain what I am teaching them and how much they are learning.
In my school, most of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. No matter the challenges they face in their life, they come to school ready and eager to learn each day. Flexible seating options stimulate students' sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Flexible seating helps make learning fun.
My Project
My students on the Autism Spectrum will use this wiggle seat and balance ball seats during seated activities while completing work at their workstation or during group instruction to help improve focus.
Instead of trying to stop the wiggles, embrace them!
These seats allow for quiet rocking or bouncing to calm or ease their frustrations and focus on the task at hand. The standing desk/workshop will let them to complete work/projects without having to take a seat. These various types of flexible seating will help my students achieve their full potential without having to sit down at a normal "desk"activity to complete their work or participate during group activities.
When we give students options of how to sit or stand, we are helping them understand how they learn best. This often helps students who have attention challenges and diagnoses of ADHD, as well as students who are on the autism spectrum. The benefits of this type of seating will be endless in my classroom and something I will be able to use year after year with all my students who learn through all learning styles!
