Kindergarten through fifth grade… These are the years that lay the foundation for many years of learning to come. In their elementary years, students learn essential academic and social skills. This is a monumental time for growth and development, including forming a mindset towards school and learning. After teaching in middle school for the past three years, I found that my students who have disabilities often develop negative feelings towards school. This is usually due to them experiencing more failures than successes. Once students enter middle school, it is hard to rebuild their confidence and change their mindset towards school.
My students experience greater challenges when it comes to making academic progress due to their special needs.
As a K-5 special education teacher, I want my students to build a love for learning and a love for school that will carry them through their journey of lifelong learning.
My Project
My students have significant learning needs. In my role as an elementary special education teacher, I teach kindergarten through fifth grade students who need intensive instruction in reading, writing, and math. My mission is to create a learning environment that will provide a comfortable, efficient, and fun learning experience. With a small group setting, my students are able to spread out to do independent and guided work. In addition to standard tables and chairs, I currently have two lap desks and one piece of action-based learning equipment.
My students need more flexible seating options to enhance their learning experience through choice and ownership.
Having more flexible seating options will give my students opportunities to work in a space that is comfortable and efficient. The ball chairs will make table work more intriguing while providing core activation with a stable base (the wobbly chairs were a bit too wobbly for my students). The surf laptop stands will add to my floor seating options and the clipboards will offer a hard surface so my students can work anywhere in the room or in the courtyard. on a nice day.
