My students are fun-loving 6th graders who come from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Our classroom is an inclusive setting, encompassing a variety of academic levels. In this environment, there are students with IEPs in place and others who are a part of the gifted and talented program. My district encourages five core values which play a large part in my classroom: compassion, perseverance, integrity, respect, and responsibility.
My students are hands-on, mobile learners.
Keeping them engaged throughout the school day is imperative. At the 6th grade level, they are at a crossroads in education. It is my job, as their teacher, to encourage them and ensure that their love for learning continues as they progress into middle and high school.
My Project
Flexible seating will increase my students' engagement throughout the day. Sitting at desks can become monotonous and tiresome for children. With other seating options, they will be able to work in a space that is comfortable and inspiring for them.
Flexible seating allows choice while fulfilling classroom requirements.
With the various seating options, students will be able to spread out around the classroom and find an area that will help them be productive. We are already blessed with several yoga balls that students can use to sit on. However, they are not as safe as they could be with bases. The bases will allow the students to move more freely without being afraid of falling off. In addition, the stools will allow the students to work at their desks or any other surface around the room while still being able to wiggle around. Some students are actually able to focus better when movement is incorporated into their learning! We all do our best work when we feel comfortable, and flexible seating will help accomplish this for my students.
