My students come to my room from all over the globe and right down the street. I've taught students from Burma, India, Syria, France, Mexico, and Argentina as well as those proud Hoosiers that were born and raised, even when transient between metropolitan districts, entirely within the 317 area code. A majority of my students, both foreign and national, come from financially strained living situations, but they are fully aware that their education is an opportunity. Our township is an institution and students and their families understand that our staff provides quality instruction, passion, and love and understanding.
The multi-cultural diversity and global student population within my room is as much an asset to my students to become aware and tolerant of others as it is an opportunity for me to become more professionally competent.
My classroom looks nothing remotely like the school population of my own elementary, middle, and high school careers, which is exactly what I love about our classroom. As a result, I want to help facilitate a positive, accepting, and engaging classroom every single day for my kids.
I've requested rocking chairs, a coffee table, a rug, and ambient lighting to create a comfortable coffee house corner in my classroom.
I will use the corner to hold individual student conferences, facilitate small group work, and incentivize hard work by offering alternate seating to students that are participating and taking their work seriously.
I want my kids to feel like coming to our classroom is a privilege. I want them to have something to look forward to.
The chairs and coffee house environment will help me meet with my students to discuss their writing in a neutral environment and provide honest, skill-based feedback in a non-intimidating setting.
