I am very fortunate to teach in a Read 180 classroom. This program helps struggling readers do a "180", or in other words, turns struggling readers into readers near or on grade level. These students are functioning below grade level but with this program, they are given an extra dose of intense reading instruction. I have seen students improve two to six grade levels in one year! It is amazing to watch their progress!
Having a special place to sit during independent reading is essential for middle school students.
Fostering a love of reading is already difficult enough to do in this world full of technology. If I can provide a cozy area that allows students to sit comfortably while reading books of their choosing, it seems to make reading that book a little more inviting.
Flexible and comfortable seating such as arm chairs provides a special place for students to sit back and relax while they read. This designated independent reading area of the classroom symbolizes a place of security and makes students feel at ease as they strive to become better readers.
Reading allows us to experience life through others' stories.
Many of my students have never even traveled out of our county but through books, they can go anywhere! Fostering a love for reading is something I am passionate about and showing students how reading can be effective, beneficial and fun is what motivates me as a teacher.
