My students need choices for seating to help them focus and be creative by not limiting them to a traditional seat. Rockers allow my students movement yet maintain safety for themselves and others.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I ask them, "Who is the best kindergarten class in the whole world?" and they reply, "We are!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners.
They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are budding ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their long successful career.
Our school serves students in grades K-5 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in the district every year! This includes a population of very diverse students from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds!
My Project
I currently have wobble chairs, rockers, and scoop chairs and traditional chairs in my classroom for flexible seating options. While these have been working great for some of my students, I have noticed that many of my students prefer to rock in their chair. They lean back in their chairs and balance their bodies. While this doesn't distract them from their work, I'm forced to remind them not to do that because in a regular chair, they may fall back.
Zuma Rockers give students the comfort of a traditional seat but allows them forward and backward movement in a safe environment.
Allowing students choices through flexible seating allows them to be a part of their learning and what would help them most.
