Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When my students begin school in August, they are five years old. Approximately seventy five percent of them are English language learners, many of whom are brand new to the language. Over ninety percent of the students at our school are a part of the free or reduced price lunch program. A majority of my students come from multiple family homes and apartments and have very little space to call their own.
Many of my students do not have any prior school experience and have never sat at a desk for an extended period of time.
This creates a high energy classroom filled with children who are ready to get their hands on new and exciting experiences while they engage together! Their high energy also creates a lot of wiggly little bodies and little patience. It is a goal of mine to enhance my students' learning by giving them the opportunity to work in a setting where they feel comfortable, safe, and free to get their energy out while still being productive kindergarteners!
My Project
While sitting in a chair is a choice for some learners, I want to be able to give my students other options because giving them the power to make a choice in their learning will also motivate and inspire my students to be more engaged.
My five and six year old students need seating options that will allow them to be comfortable and also get out some of their wiggles.
The balance ball chairs will be a great alternative to a chair because students can rock back and forth, and bounce up and down while working. This will help them to focus their energy on learning.
