Help me give my students flexible seating options such as colorful stools and clip boards so that they have more choices about where to complete their work.
I teach in a Kindergarten / First Grade classroom with 22 amazing energetic students. My students are always ready to come into the classroom each morning ready to share the day. At my suburban school in California, every student is provided with free breakfast and over half the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students come from families that are socially disadvantaged, but they do not let that stop them!
All of my students require frequent brain breaks, consisting of movement videos, in order to get their wiggles out and sit through a lesson.
We all love completing brain breaks together and then being able to get back into the routines and procedures of our day. It would be great to have additional ways to get our wiggles out such as having flexible seating options and choices of where our bodies learn.
My Project
Right now students have two choices of where to sit in our classroom to complete work: their assigned carpet square or their chair at a table with 4 other students. By having the option of sitting on a stool, students will be able to work more comfortably at our taller kidney table. Students who prefer to stay at their own table spot and chair, but need a little more sensory input will now have the opportunity to use a wiggle seat. As always students will be able to read at any spot on our classroom floor, however now they will be able to even complete work by bringing a clipboard with them.
