In a rural area, resources can be difficult to come by. My high school students come from various backgrounds and family lives and I strive to create equitable opportunities for each of them! Our school is innovative and takes personalized learning seriously. In order to achieve that, educators must work tirelessly to create these opportunities.
My students are each unique in both their learning and their personal lives.
And for that, I want to provide them with the best education possible!
My Project
Flex seating has been proven to be beneficial for student learning and success. As a member of my district’s Universal Design for Learning team, finding multiple modes for student success in the classroom has become my top priority. Flexible seating helps students not only feel physically but emotionally comfortable, and engages them to learn in a way that actually works for them.
Having a round table as a seating options gives way to the use of centers, small group discussions, and collaboration.
Not only will a variety of seating options be helpful for the students, but it will benefit the UDL team as well. We will be able to gather data for our purpose and can ultimately affect the 644 students at Sanborn. Ideally, I would like to have a number of options for students to have when they walk in the room, but starting with a round table meets the needs of many of my goals this school year.
Flexible seating allows for students to create their own microclimate. Students will be able to engage and self monitor with an adapted classroom environment to meet their needs. This can also foster a learning environment that inspires creativity and is accessible for all learners by promoting a climate that reflects the ever-changing, hyper-connected world students live in. Students will be able to develop self direction skills and prioritize the task at hand in a flexible classroom by students to reflect on what that means to them and implement that as necessary.
