My 19 first grade students are active learners. They come to school with varying strengths and abilities. One thing we all have in common is needing to feel safe and supported in our classroom all day. We would love to be able to choose our most comfortable spots in the classroom where we feel we can learn best. Some of my students prefer to lay on the floor, others like to cozy up in a big chair, or lean against a soft surface. I want to provide that for them!
Giving students choices as to where they can sit creates an environment conducive to active learning.
High expectations and creative thinking are keys to a successful flexible classroom. With a variety of seating and work spaces, the classroom can become a place where students feel intrigued and motivated to learn and develop new ideas.
My Project
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
Research shows that flexible seating has led to an improvement in student work, happier and more engaged students, and greater student participation and more invigorating student conversations.
Students are given the power of choice. Are you more engaged sitting on the floor in your own space? Does leaning back on a cozy seat cushion keep you more focused? This ability to choose empowers students to take control of their learning, and ultimately produce their best work.
My students need flexible seating items such as picnic seats, a cushioned chair and carpet "sit spots" to help us!
The funding of this project will allow me to transform my classroom into a learning space that meets the needs of all learners. Students will be able to work in ways that they are most comfortable. The classroom environment will be warm, welcoming, and buzzing with engaged students working collaboratively.
