My classroom is just like the city of Chicago, full of bustle and excitement! Each day when the students come into the classroom they select a picture of how they are feeling and what they are excited to learn about. Promoting a positive and encouraging environment is critical for my students!
These Kindergarten, 1st graders, and 2nd graders with autism in a low-income area depend on a school as a safe-haven and a place of discovery.
The students in my classroom face hardships inside and outside of the classroom. At school, we try our best to provide all the tools necessary for them to be successful; that are not readily available at home.
Flexible seating provides students with choice, comfort, collaboration, movement, and sensory input. This provides a positive learning enviornment for the students.
3 wobble chairs, bean bags, and seat cushions will provide comfort while also promoting choice and collaboration in the classroom.
Choice: Students with autism learn best when they have some control over their learning enviornment. Flexible seating allows student to chose where and who they sit with!
Comfort: Special needs students often have physical disabilities and require modified seating. Flexible seating allows student the comfort they need to be successful while learning.
Collaboration: Flexible seating allows students to make decisions together on where they want to sit, creating a positive and conducive classroom.
Movement: Student with ADHD, Autism, and Down-Syndrome often get the wiggles in the classroom! Wobbly seats allows students to get the movement they need, while learning!
Sensory Input: Flexible seating stimulates students sense of touch. This stimulation can help children focus and process information.
Flexible seating with wobble chairs, seat cushions, and bean bags, is a new practice that will benefit special-needs students in a positive way that will contribute to their success!
