My students love to collaborate in our English classroom. Having students sit in small groups gives them many opportunities to discuss and create together as they learn. This reinforces their understanding of the texts and concepts we study.
I have noticed that many of them would like more of a choice in our classroom environment; they enjoy moving around the room, standing, sitting on the floor, or pulling up chairs next to other tables.
I don't want to force them to stay in their desks. I would like to create a space that has a more welcoming atmosphere, while still allowing for top notch learning experiences.
Flexible seating options will give my students greater comfort and choice.
My Project
My students sit in desks ALL DAY LONG in their classes. They are uncomfortable, which doesn't help them do their best learning.
When they come to English class, they would love the opportunity to sit in comfortable bean bag chairs or to stand up at a tall desk.
Being comfortable will allow them to relax and focus on their work. Not every student learns best in a standard school desk. Having flexible seating options will empower them to choose their best learning environment.
Lap desks will help them have a work surface as they relax in a bean bag chair.
