Flexible Seating for Student-Centered Mathematics Classroom (Part 2)
My students need two activity tables for our class -a tall work table for students who want to stand or sit while working, and the half-moon table for small group instruction with the teacher.
My students come to our school because of our focus on sustainability in our environment, social-emotional well-being, and education, just to name a few. I am the lone general education mathematics teacher in our 100 student middle school, but within those 100 students' minds are 100 different ways of learning.
With a mixed population of both general education and special education students within a general education classroom, a need for alternative seating and a more dynamic, movement-based classroom is a necessity.
My students love to color, listen to music, interact with their peers in small groups, complete project-based-learning assignments, work on game-based learning on their computers, but they can do all these things while learning mathematics.
My students are an eclectic mix of cultures, races, ages, beliefs, and most-importantly, mathematical skill levels. These students care about their environment, can have group discussions about hard-hitting issues, work on their social-emotional goals with their peers via Positive Discipline, and love to be challenged.
My Project
Our first project funded through Donors Choose was focused on actual seating options for my students - stools, higher-back chairs, and a couch. With the addition of this second project, the transformation of my outdated, teacher-centered classroom will finally be complete.
This project is focused on the workstations for students within the classroom - providing them flexibility to not only be comfortable in their environment, but be comfortable with their own workspace.
The conference-style table is amazing for some of our students who choose to stand while working instead of sitting, while the half-moon table will be incorporated into small-group instruction between myself and several students.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mr. Scotto and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
