My students need flexible seating options in order to be more relaxed and comfortable when doing their classwork. This will decrease school performance anxiety by allowing students to feel at home and accomplish their goals.
My students are in a self-contained special education class. They are officially in fourth and fifth grade, but most of them are working below grade level in most subject areas. The majority of these students come from low-income households. Most do not have access to the materials needed in order to find academic success.
These students are struggling academically due to a variety of disabilities, such as Autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and learning disabilities.
They are working below grade-level and require special supplemental materials to bridge the gap.
My Project
My students have a variety of learning and physical disabilities. I have researched many flexible seating arrangements and have read about all of the benefits for students with special needs. By giving students choice and freedom in their seating, they will be able to relax and feel comfortable in their classroom. This allows students to become more engaged in their learning.
We are currently lacking comfortable flexible seating options for students who choose to work on the floor.
Often times, students work better when they get to spread out and not have to sit at a desk all day. By purchasing some bean bag chairs, students will have the opportunity to read in a comfortable area, or even work with a clipboard for other subject areas. They will serve as great reading nooks!
