Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of working with amazing third grade scholars. I work in an integrated co-taught setting, therefore, there are 27 students, 1 special educator, 1 general educator, and 1 teaching assistant present in our classroom. About 1/3 of our class receives special education services, and about 1/3 of our students receive ENL support. Our classroom is very busy and students are often moving about, in and out of the classroom.
My students live in an urban community and many face hardships outside of school.
They love to feel appreciated, loved, and respected. My students are super helpful and love to have jobs in the classroom. I am so excited to work with my group of students this year and I am hopeful that all students will achieve and make great progress.
My Project
The kidney shaped table is utilized every day, all day, in my classrooms. This table is used for small group instruction, as well as provides a comfortable space for struggling students to sit when they need space, redirection to task, or extra support with a task. These stools are perfect for our classroom because the students love to sit on them! It gives them something to look forward to when they leave their desk to come do work at the kidney shaped table.
The stools are also perfect because of the lack of space in our classrooms.
We have a total of 27 students, which means a lot of desks! There is little room to maneuver around the classroom, which often interrupts instruction. Having the stools would allow for more space because they are not bulky and they can easily be pushed under the table when not being used. Also, more stools can fit around the table than chairs, which means more students can be pulled for support when needed! Since our school is departmentalized in third grade, my ICT (Integrated Co-Taught) class goes to one room for homeroom, math, and content. The other part of the day is spent in a separate room for reading and writing. A kidney shaped table is also utilized in this room for me to pull small groups and support students in a close proximity.
