I am a second year teacher new to the district. I teach second grade in a small PK-8 Title 1 school.
The students in my second grade class are very enthusiastic about learning.
They all have a wonderful sense of humor and greet me with a smile every morning. One of their favorite activities is flashlight reading. I play a video of a campfire while they find a comfortable place to read in the room. Unfortunately, we do not have many comfortable places to sit. I would love for my students to be able to focus more on what they read and less on being uncomfortable.
Several of my students struggle with ADHD or other learning disabilities. They try their hardest, no matter what! We have one class per grade from PK-2, which means our students become part of a close community.
My Project
Literacy is an important foundation in education. Flexible seating will give my students more options and an increased desire to read. They are very bright and love to learn. Unfortunately, it is difficult for students to sit at a desk all day and stay focused. Many students choose to sit on the floor throughout the day to learn and read. However, they become uncomfortable quickly and feel the need to move around the room often. I would love for them to read without feeling confined to a desk. These cushions, pillows, and comfortable chairs will allow my students to relax while they read.
These flexible seating options will help keep students more engaged without being uncomfortable.
