My students need stimulation. There is no substitute for activities that require kids to use their bodies as well as their minds. Manipulatives are tools that let children think, perform, problem-solve, and make things happen while they are working toward a solution. It provides an important step.
I have the pleasure of teaching an inclusion classroom that contains students with mild to severe special needs.
Inclusion is an approach to educate students with special needs. Under the inclusion model, students with special needs spend most, or all of their time, with non-disabled students. My students come from a low-income, usually one parent household with many siblings.
However, they are the most loving and caring group of students. I look forward coming to work to be able to teach them and enhance their abilities so that in the future they are able to strive in today's society. Our school is one of three elementary schools in the district. It consists of pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. Each grade has anywhere from 100-120 students, all from the same socioeconomic background. The teachers travel from within the same city to up to 90 minutes away to work here.
My Project
Flexible seating will benefit all my students in many different ways. Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class without moving the old fashioned heavy desks.
Flexible seating options stimulate students sense of touch.
This type of stimulation can help my students focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for my students with ADHD and autism.
Flexible seating helps make learning fun! The benefits far outweigh any negatives! It encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. It also allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. This burns more calories and increases metabolism.
