Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 9th grade special education co-teacher to twelve amazing students who have a variety of mild to moderate physical and/or intellectual impairments. My students are integrated in an inclusion setting with their peers in all of their core classes. I push into their math and English classes to co-teach and provide additional support.
Despite their impairments, my students are vibrant and valuable members of our school community who are looking forward to a successful first year of high school.
I teach in an urban district where all students qualify for free and reduced lunch. As a school, we don't always have access to the resources and funding that we would like to help our students succeed.
My Project
My school uses an innovative and student-centered learning model that transforms the traditional classroom into a self-directed learning space. All students have been given Chromebook computers to access the curriculum through the Summit Learning platform. Within this platform, students learn at their own pace, thus, students are all working on different tasks.
Flexible seating options, such as a Big Comfy Bean Bag Chair and a Stability Ball, allow our students to access a warm, comfortable classroom environment that lends itself to student choice, collaboration, and community.
I envision a group of students working on a mat space on the floor with lap desks, another student working independently on a bean bag chair, other students using wobble seats while collaborating at a table, etc. We have already transformed the way we learn, please help us transform our physical space!
