My students need a variety of flexible seating such as balance balls and stools. Flexible seating is also an incentive for good behavior because if they can't handle "fun" seats, then they will have to use a "boring" chair.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At my school, we take pride in our diverse community and embrace the uniqueness of each child. My school has 540 students which are 31% African American, 65% Hispanic. 90% are economically disadvantaged and 55% are LEP. The community is incredibly diverse and the student body represents 22 different countries.
We believe that we are stronger when we work together.
As an ATPE member, I take pride in our diverse community and embrace the uniqueness of each child.
Teachers have the freedom to innovate through technology and personalized learning to meet the needs of all students.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go.
Stability balls, the large inflatable balls used for yoga and exercise, are also used in classrooms in place of chairs.
The balls aren't used for fun, but rather to help students sit up straight and engage the muscles and the parts of their brains needed to remain balanced on a large ball. Stability ball classroom chairs provide benefits ranging from quieter classrooms to more attentive students.
The Balance Ball chairs will be used for my special needs students in particular, who are always rocking in their chairs and need to move. I have a lot of students who like to fidget or move while they work, and regular chairs don't allow them to do that. So for these students they can use the wobble cushions chairs because it allows them to move around while they learn. The plastic stack stools will be used at my small group table. These seats allow for quick and quiet transitions during station activities.
Flexible seating is also an incentive for good behavior because if they can't handle "fun" seats, then they will have to use a "boring" chair. This project will allow my students to experience flexible seating in my classroom this year!
