I am the lucky teacher of a kindergarten class of 27 energetic and loving students. My students are very enthusiastic and active 5 and 6-year-olds! They love learning through doing, which makes my teacher heart happy. Our classroom is an old computer lab originally designed for a high school, which makes having so many little ones in the room difficult! My students have a variety of backgrounds, as well as experiences.
In the winter of 2015, our school's roof collapsed, and we were moved into a middle school.
We were incredibly fortunate that there were no faculty or students in the school at the time. During the collapse, we lost so much, but gained even more. We were able to see our community rally around us to lift us back up and settle us into our new home.
My Project
With our curriculum and expectations constantly changing and becoming more challenging, I like to ensure that I'm focusing on supporting the whole child. One way I do this is through movement breaks built into our day as transition times and as rewards. But sitting still for lessons, group work, and individual work is hard work for 5 and 6 year olds! My goal as a teacher is to meet my students needs academically, socially, emotionally, as well as their sensory needs!
I'd like to give my students the ability to become their best selves by offering a choice of where to sit, while encouraging their bodies to move!
In my project, I've requested flexible seating options at various heights, including balance balls, wobble cushions, and sit spots. This will give a wide range of options to find what helps each student learn best.
Kayla Delzer said it best; “Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?”By giving such young learners the chance to become independent and responsible for their learning we are guiding them to become the best learners possible!
