I teach in a Title 1 poverty school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. I'm the general education teacher with two inclusion classes where almost half of each class receives special education services. Regardless of this, my students come to school every day ready to learn. They challenge themselves daily to become well-rounded individuals academically as well as socially. I can count on them to work hard and try their best each and every day.
My students are enthusiastic learners and not afraid to try new things.
They take pride in their learning. I hope to continue to foster their critical thinking skills by providing a classroom environment that is comfortable and allows for better focus.
My Project
My students learn best when they are comfortable, but my room is filled with students who are all different and one size doesn't fit all. There are very few places in my room that are off limits. Students might lay on the floor with a clipboard to write, lean up against a wall to read, or curl up in the corner of the library to do math. A variety of seating options will make it easier to adjust the heights of our traditional desks to better meet the needs of my students.
My students are more focused and engaged in their learning when they are able to choose where and what they sit on during our different class activities.
The chair bands will replace previously broken bands, the go anywhere chairs will allow for more comfortable seating on the floor and the beanbag chair will make our library more accessible and welcoming.
My students have learned which kinds of seats work best for them based on the different tasks, their mood, and alertness levels. I hope that these new seating options provide my students a further understanding of what helps them focus more, and provide them more opportunities to make their own choices to help them learn better.
