My Students

I love teaching 6th grade! My students are amazing individuals. Each year, I emphasize the importance of "building a classroom community of kindness" from day one. I am absolutely blown away at how quickly they meet that mark! We focus on a core value every month such as kindness, gratitude, friendship, etc. We not only focus outward, but try to focus inward, with the explicit intent of working to become better people and better students. I use flexible seating in my classroom as a means to help students figure out how best they learn. Have you ever been in an uncomfortable seat for hours at a time for a training? It is so hard to learn that way. By giving students seating options, they not only grow to understand how best they focus and learn, but also gain confidence and learn responsibility. If a seating choice is not working out, we discuss how to make a better choice and we change things. Giving students power to work in their own best environment is empowering! Social emotional development is successful as we strive to become our best selves, learn flexibility and responsibility and are able to make decisions.

My Project

With all the stress surrounding my students during this Covid-19 pandemic, having an inviting classroom full of flexible seating options allows a safe and calming atmosphere for learning. When an environment is comfortable, it is easier to focus and to engage in learning. When a room is organized, chaos seems to waft away. Allowing children to choose how they physically feel while learning, gives them a chance to be responsible in their choices. My classroom is a community where consistency and choice empower students to be their best selves at all times!
