We are lucky to be a part of one of the most diverse school districts in the state and the student population at our school also reflects that. We have many students who bring with them very unique perspectives, values, rich traditions and family culture. About 60% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch and depend on us for two of their meals each day.
Despite having students that care about each other, are creative, think critically, speak multiple languages and work hard to overcome hurdles as learners, our school has struggled to achieve academic standards.
Many of our students spend their time at home caring for siblings and some even go with a parent to help at their place of work. The students deserve to have a community at our school where they feel supported and motivated to achieve their learning goals.
My Project
We have 75 minute class periods at our school, which is great for ensuring students are meeting the Learning Targets but hard to keep the students focused for so long. I have bean bag chairs in my classroom for independent work time, but our students need another option while they are seated at their desks. These Active Learning Stools will help students keep their bodies moving in an appropriate way so that they can focus more in class. The desk and chair bands will help my kids release energy instead of tapping their pencils on the tables!
Middle school students still have so much energy, they need to be able to move their bodies to keep their brains focused and working hard!
