Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a very rural school where most of them spend out-of-school hours helping on a farm or at a local business and/or in sports. They don't always see the value of school, especially writing, where they typically struggle.
Many of our students grew up working with their hands and dread the monotony of a typical classroom, so my goal as a teacher is to re-instill a love of learning through innovative teaching strategies and a fun, welcoming atmosphere.
My Project
It's my firm belief that you cannot get students to learn until you first get them to enjoy coming to your classroom. Some of that is accomplished by creating a welcoming environment. My students currently attend school in a building many decades old. We were supposed to be into a brand new school last year and were severely delayed due to Hurricane Harvey after our community was hit, construction was delayed, and recovery and cleanup were in full force. Our students are used to having second-hand and outdated, so I'd love for once, to be able to give them something new and special. Help me make my secondary ELA classroom their favorite classroom, and therefore, their most effective classroom!
With your help, I'd like to create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and enjoyable, is productivity-inspiring, and that is a safe space where my students feel confident expressing themselves and being vulnerable to making mistakes, especially after attending school so many years in a run down, outdated building.
Help me do this by providing flexible seating, such as wobble chairs, balance ball chairs, and comfy arm chairs to improve student productivity inspire creativity!
I'd like for it to be the place they like to hang out after school, build book love, and feel eager to come to for extra help!
