Flexible Seating for Low-Income Special Education Classroom
My students need comfortable, durable flexible seating options such as bean bags and balance balls that will help them focus for longer periods of time.
All of my students have learning disabilities that range from needing a little extra time processing written language to reading below Kindergarten level. They are from low-income families and many are English Language Learners as well. Many of my students live with their grandparents or another relative because one or both of their parents are incarcerated or suffering from addiction. It's important to know that my students have many challenges that can make focusing on school very difficult at times.
My students, with all their challenges, are the most incredible, funny, sweet, and smart kids you could hope to meet.
I learn more from them than you can imagine. They have taught me patience, dedication, loyalty and of course the value of a good joke. They deserve the best, even though they don't always believe it. That's what I'm here for.
My Project
Many of my students have ADHD and it is difficult for them to sit and pay attention in traditional classroom furniture. The wobble seats, wobble stools, and balance balls are perfect for students who need to move and bounce in order to focus.
The physical activity that flexible seating provides is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. In fact, a paper by Matthew T. Mahar, et al finds that: "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially".
