My students need an area rug, pillows, stools, and a new chair to spread out with when we are working. This will help with student choice and provide comfortable working areas.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, collaboration, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group that I will miss so much, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.
An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student.
For example, picture a student who skipped or didn’t have access to breakfast. As the countdown to lunch approaches, the sound of his or her growling stomach will make it impossibly hard to hear the teacher’s voice. A uncomfortable chair can have the same affect.
Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. As one teacher said, “There is no better way to show your support for a student-centered classroom, than creating a classroom from a child’s point of view.” In her opinion, comfortable students are engaged students.
By gaining a new chair, rug, stools, and pillows in my classroom my students will have a choice of a new seat when working and help them stay focused and ready to learn. The stools are easy to move around the room, the rug is great for my students that like to lay on the floor, all my students argue over pillows to use when having student choice seating, and the butterfly chair is their personal favorite spot to choose.
