My students need many different options for flexible seating. The supplies being requested, along with modifications I can make to our standard classroom furniture will create an environment that students can learn while moving.
As a teacher in a low income school, I have a class of students who face difficult situations every day. For many of my students, school is their safe place where love, breakfast, and lunch are their constants.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
With a group of students who sometimes feel like their life is out of control, I hope to be able to give them the sense of control and choice in our classroom.
The expectations set for my students do not allow for them to be the five-year-olds they are. My kids work incredibly hard and exceed my expectations every day. With that being said, it is a struggle to have them sit at their desks each day. Our traditional set up for our classroom is not working for the needs of these busy students.
My Project
I have been teaching kindergarten for the past 7 years and I have noticed, each year more and more, students have a harder time sitting still and staying focused on their work.
I want to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom to allow my busy students a chance to keep their body moving while completing their work and still allowing them the choice and control in how their school work is completed.
I want to incorporate Wobble chairs for my students who prefer to work at a table but need to be able to move their body to continue to stay focused. I want to add the bean bag chairs for students to move around the classroom and either sit by themselves or in a small collaborative group. Some children like to sit on the floor, so I want to add the Garden kneeling pads to provide comfort while working at lower tables. I have some very busy students who would really benefit from being able to bounce while completing their work which is why I added the balance balls. With this change in our room, I expect my students will be more engaged in their learning and have an environment they feel safe coming to every day. I want my students to have a place where they can feel like they have some control over their day, and still, have the kinesthetic options to continue to keep their attention and help with their attention.
