Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of working for a relatively small school in a low-income neighborhood that just so happens to have the best students in the world. Despite what many of them go through in their day-to-day lives, they come to school with a smile, a great attitude, and are ready to do their best. They inspire me every day!
Just as they are putting their best efforts forward, they deserve me putting in my best efforts to secure them the materials that will make their learning more engaging and successful.
While I would provide all the extras that the school budget doesn't allow out of my own pocket if I could, that is just not possible. Budgets aside, they are great kids and deserving of all of the supplies and materials that higher income schools can provide.
My school is an extended family and my class is an even closer family. We learn, teach, problem solve, create, make mistakes, dream, laugh, and sometimes even cry together. They teach me as much as I teach them every day. I am honored to be their teacher and am reminded of this fact every day.
My Project
My current classroom environment, while welcoming, colorful and engaging, is not physically comfortable. At my school, we have the traditional desks and chairs. Having learned about flexible seating and the benefits for students in terms of their focus, improved attendance, and academic performance, I have been wanting to transition to flexible seating for over a year now.
Flexible seating will transform the learning environment in a way that will impact students in a positive way on a daily basis.
Students will be more focused on their learning when comfortable and not "stuck" in a traditional desk. Knowing they have a choice in their seating is also a great motivator, not only just in terms of their focus and time on task but also to get them to just come to school. Attendance is half the battle for some students. In addition, being in a comfortable position while learning is critical for students' understanding of the material they are trying to learn. I have found that if students are not comfortable, they are moving around, making any excuse to get up, not to be disruptive- just because they are tired of their rigid seating assignments and hard chairs.
To make this happen, my students need wobble stools, balance ball chairs, and portable stools to get us started with our flexible seating.
Students having a variety of seating options, such as these, will allow them to find a set up that works for themselves and their personal learning styles. These materials would be used every day as the main seating for students and will impact their learning every day!
