Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a school of 3,000 students with over 40 languages spoken and thousands of background stories it is necessary for students to feel safe, to feel like they have a special place in school. I try to make my classroom that safe place for students. I teach five periods a day but my room is never empty. There are always students there talking before school, learning during classes, getting extra help during lunch and working or volunteering on prom committees after school. I want to create a space that offers students a place to collaborate and learn from each other as well as from me.

My Project

My high school students need to be active in their learning the same way younger students need to be. Often times high school classrooms aren’t as inviting as elementary school classrooms. This project would create different areas within the classroom for students to engage with each other and collaborate with each other. This would help to create students who will hopefully be active and engaged members of society. By teaching students to analyze and then to verbalize their ideas with peers we will create young adults who are confident in their own thoughts but willing to listen to others’ viewpoints.
