Hey Everyone! My name is Mr. D, and I am a high school math teacher at a public, tuition free International Baccalaureate school. At this school, we focus on a rigorous, real world approach to education, where content is integrated and interdisciplinary.
Our students come from a diverse cultural & socioeconomic backgrounds, and are chosen by a lottery from different home districts.
They are choosing to work very hard - taking classes that are taught at an equivalent level to honors/AP courses all 4 years of high school. They are bright, curious, excited, and intelligent to start, and are working towards becoming lifelong learners!
As in most classrooms, students have a multitude of learning styles & comfort levels. My aim is to provide them with flexible seating, differentiated instruction, and a classroom suited for 21st century learning and work skills. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate any help I can get!
My Project
Flexible seating in a classroom provides students with options to support different learning styles. It also gives students choice, and supports an environment where students are less sedentary - one of the greatest detriments to health.
Currently, my students have 28 traditional desks, one group work table, an old couch and two black office leather chairs - I am trying to reduce the number of desks by half.
Why? There are some students that work better at individual desks, but many need more of a "coffee shop" environment to focus.
So, the high top tables I have selected allow for students to sit in groups of 4 to get their work done. They also allow students to stand if that is how they work better. The chairs I have selected fit either the high tops or my large group work table, that currently has old chairs that are cracking and falling apart. I have brought a couple chairs from home, but it would be great to have nicer chairs for the students to use!
