This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a public school in a Fourth classroom, in south Georgia. We have five classrooms in fourth grade, and our students come from a rural community, outside of Savannah. Most of the students come from a lower socioeconomic home. All of the students within our school receive free lunch. My goal as their teacher is to provide resources that other students are accustomed to receiving.
Our classrooms are self- contained.
So our days will be spent developing a deeper understanding of all the subjects. I am striving to deepen their love of learning in all of the subjects and to accommodate their different learning styles. I want them to leave my classroom excited for fifth grade and what is to come.
My Project
According to Kayla Delzer, author of the popular 2015 EdSurge story, “Why the 21st-Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks”, "When students feel they have some control over their environment, they are often more engaged and perform better academically".
These furniture selections will provide my students the opportunity to have control over where they complete their Guided Reading centers.
We participate in Guided Reading everyday for about 40 minutes, and my goal is to allow the students to move around the room while completing their work.
Giving my students these options will improve their concentration and allow them to perform better academically.
