This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are in 6th-8th grade and have a variety of low-incidence disabilities. They are in a self-contained special education classroom, where they benefit from a structured environment that provides them with engaging learning opportunities at differentiated levels. In our classroom, we work on functional academics, social/emotional learning, and life skills. My students have a genuine passion for school. Each day they come up with new questions, eager to learn more. They love to challenge themselves and always embrace their mistakes as learning opportunities!
My students` bright personalities, contagious smiles, and amazing dance moves continue to bring light to a world that can often seem dark.
All of my students come from an underserved inner-city community where they face obstacles that make the middle school even more challenging than it already is. Despite the poverty, gun violence, and trauma that my students endure, they continue to strive for success in school. They encourage and love one another without limitations. They spread this positivity, both inside and outside of our classroom setting. My students inspire me to be the best teacher that I can be for them because they truly deserve it!
My Project
My students need bean bag chairs, stability balls, wobble cushions, stools, and bouncy chair bands to improve their focus and regulate their sensory processing throughout the school day. The majority of my students have Autism spectrum disorder. They have difficulty processing sensory information. They engage in self-stimulatory behaviors and have difficulty focusing for extended periods of time.
Flexible seating would allow my student to fidget in a way that will not distract them from learning.
It will create a more comfortable environment while easing student anxiety. Flexible seating would also provide my students with choices and enable them to feel more responsible for their own learning. We would love to have flexible seating options in our functional classroom!
