This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am currently the library media specialist at a Title I school that serves a vast demographic of children. Many of our students have never left the immediate area and have not had many experiences in life. Many come from homes that are below the poverty level and many of them do not have the necessary supplies or needs for daily living.
My students love the idea of having a neat, cool, and exciting place to visit.
I have worked hard to make the library just that place. Many of the children escape to places through their reading. I have seen so many of them have light bulb moments as they finally find that book series that fits them just right.
My Project
Since being in the library and watching many children visit and leave still not interested in reading, I knew I had to encourage them to take the time to love reading. I have incorporated several areas that have flexible seating options and those have fostered the love of reading. I still do not have enough spaces for an entire class to sit, therefore some children are not able to get to a seat to sit and relax and read.
Providing flexible seating for children to sit in while they read has encouraged some of the most reluctant readers to take time to enjoy a good book.
I want to be able to provide that opportunity for All the students.
