My students need to have the ability to work and study the way they do best-whether that is standing, sitting on a stability ball, or laying on the floor!
Our middle school is a suburban middle school in Western Massachusetts. Our community was once an old factory town, but has become more and more unique and diverse over the last 20 years. We have wonderful small businesses and a proud set of traditions that keep our community strong. Despite this, we have a school district with no extra money for anything but the basics. Our teachers and students are amazing, but we teach in elementary and middle schools that are aged and falling apart.
My English Language Arts classes are filled with AMAZINGLY creative pre-teens!
They love reading and writing, and being the unique beings that they are. As a teacher, I try to provide opportunities for ALL learners to succeed and be joyful about learning.
My Project
As a veteran teacher, I have observed the change in student learning over the last five years. As our curriculum has become more difficult and challenging, students have begun to struggle staying focused and working efficiently and smartly in the class. I have come to realize that the chairs they have to sit in all day are terribly uncomfortable and that many of them need to move or fidget as they work.
Having students choose the right way to learn empowers their choice-making, teaches self-advocacy, and highlights a self-awareness that results in more confident learners.
By offering a variety of seating and standing options, I hope to access the avenue of learning that works best for each student.
i am looking to purchase a couple of wobble stools (which allow students to sit and "wobble" while seated), five balance balls to build core strength and allow bouncing, and finally six cushions to place on existing seats so that students can fidget in their existing seats. Each of these purchases will give my students choices in seating and allow them to move in a way that keeps them focused.
I have already noticed a huge change in some of my students by offering a standing table. I can't wait to see the results of offering seating that allows them to move a bit while seated!
