I am the lucky teacher to 24 amazing 2nd grade learners! Our school is located in a suburb outside Washington, D.C., and the students who attend come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Many students are from military families or are English Language Learners.
My students are active and full of life each day they come in ready to learn and be engaged.
These young learners bring something special to our learning community. I am driven every day to provide my students with the best and most current teaching practices and resources to aid them in their development and learning!
My Project
As a 2nd grade teacher, balancing the amount of time my students need to learn with the amount of time their bodies need to move is a challenging task. Naturally, my 2nd graders have a lot of energy. When I work, I want to be comfortable and sometimes it is not at a desk. The new furniture will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise.
Shortened recesses and activity times cause students to easily lose focus, you can understand why students now have a harder time attending to their learning and often struggle to feel successful in school.
Every day I try to create lessons, activities, and tasks that engage my students mind and body. The harsh reality is that students still need to be able to perform well on standardized tests and tasks which forces them to sit for long periods of time. These students are learning that a classroom is not just within the four walls of a classroom. It doesn't have to be a place that is orderly and uncomfortable. My students need 5 wobble chairs to keep their bodies as busy as their brains! Help these students get a chance for change.
